Exam finally over!!! yes...i can finally enjoy my holidays.......the past few weeks i have been preparing very hard for my sem exam...now the 'battle' is over!
yup, before my first paper fluid mechanics A,i have gone for my wisdom tooth surgery. on that fateful day, i brought my fearful heart to the dental clinic. although i knew it was a minor surgery and would take abt 30-45 minutes to complete, i still haven overcome my phobia abt the dental visit,or rather the tooth extraction. the last i had my tooth extracted was when i was in primary school. that was abt 9-10 years ago. i remember that female dentist was very fierce, she just extract my milky tooth w/o hesistation and w/o injecting anaesthesis to my teeth. do u noe how painful it was to extract the tooth w/o anaethesia? that dentist was damn crazy lor! that's why until now i'm still having phobia abt visiting dentist...
that day i really made a spectacles of myself(made myself malu)... the specialist dentist wanted to inject the 1st shot of anaethesia into my gum,but my whole body was shaking non-stop,so the dentsit asked me to relax for a while b4 continuing..but i still can't stop shaking no matter how i tried to relax. the assistant tried to calm me down by saying that this was just like a normal tooth extraction only and covering my eyes with surgery cloths and the injection proceeds. i thought it was only one shot only, but i was wrong. he continues injecting more anaesthesia to my gum. luckily my mouth was getting more and more numb,so i manage to relax. the battle began. lol... throughout the surgery my heart was beatting faster and faster, although i was on anaesthetic effect. the sound of sawing my wisdom tooth into halves was so scary. then followed by the extraction of tooth, lastly followed by the stitching of the wound.
the whole procedure was quite short la. if i was more relaxed enough, the surgery would hve been done much earlier. the more embarrasing things abt this surgery is that i still need my mum's company when i was in surgery coz i was too nervous. I'm 18 years old already yet in the dental room i behaves like a child... even the dentist and his assistant said that no matter how nervous are the patients, they have handled before, but never encountered such a nervous to an exaggerating extent patient like me... i was so malu lor....but when my wisdom tooth was extracted out of my mouth, i felt like i've given birth to a new born but decomposed baby..hehehe...cuz when i saw how decayed is my wisdom tooth i felt very disgusting and i promised to keep good care of my teeth after the surgery and visit the dentist every 6 months...i have learnt my lesson...
So after the surgery the assistant issued me the medication and the cotton gauze to stop bleeding of my surgery wound. Do u noe how much the whole surgery cost? $800 net, just for one wisdom tooth only lei! Very exp lor....during the recovery period i am not able to eat solid food,if not it will cause the stitch on my wound to loosen and crack open my wound...oh my god, that means i have to stay away from fine food for a few days..but nvm...i believe my wound will heal soon and i can revert back to my normal diet!
talking abt my recent sem exam, i have five papers to take this sem. luckily i managed to get sufficient rest and have some time to study for fluid mech A exam (i only spend two days study FMA). The fluid mech A paper was quite ok,but got one short question stunned me..abt the sentosa tunnel making site...this question was the same as what i encountered in the past year exam paper..but i wanted to ask kon but he mia the day before exam so cannot get him lor...maybe i was too confident that this question would not come out again in the coming exam, but i was wrong! this question is making use of bernoulli equation and continuity equation but i still cant do the question...besides this question, other questions were of no problem...
For bia(basic instrumental analysis) paper, as expected, topics taught by mr jeffrey whey sure come out "distinction" question...like on eof the short question asking about the solvent extraction. which two solutes will be extracted separately and only one solute remains in aq. phase. the correct answer should be the CHCl3 (chloroform) should be extracted first using basic buffer, followed by CH3COOH(acetic acid) extracted using acidic buffer cuz at basic pH, the acetic acid will not be extracted, only CHCl3 can be extracted. then CH3COOH can be extracted at acidc pH (using Le chatelier's principle to explain). another solute NaCl remains in aq. phase cuz it is permanently ionised so will not be extracted into organic phase....but my answer was the other way round. acetc acid first(acidic buffer),then chloroform(basic buffer)...not sure still can get marks or not...
there is another "distinction" question on the adsorption chromatography (one of the long questions), one of the sub question ask what happens to the retention time of the solute(polar in nature) if the column was slightly heated before use? this question was based on application. i thought the answer was the retention time will decrease cux the charcoal will decompose on heating so less polar stationary phase available to attract solutes, yet the correct answer is: the retention time will increase cuz the heated column contains less moisture,so the stat phase become more active(polar),so the polar solutes will stay in the stat phase. oh shit,i actually forget about this effect of water on active sites thingy....nvm....i have done my best le...
for PI(process instrumentaion) paper, overall the paper was quite easy cuz the question format was similar to the past yr exam papers. just that one question on derivation of hydrostatic pressure equation for level measurement question(long question) was very tricky and difficult.
next paper is the engineering maths 2A paper. for sect A,i was quire confident of getting full marks. just that ther's one question on solving the differential eqn using lapalce transform method was quite tricky. i can do this question but my final answer looks very weird,it contains the trig function that is not used in this syllabus, i think it can only be due to my carelessness baa..but luckily i got do all other questions as backup...and there's one long question on step-function. So far the past yr exam paper doesnt have that question as long question. the 2nd part i was quite stunned cuz u have to evalute the unknown values from the step function graph, but i can do the 1st and the last two parts of this long question cuz its laplace transform question and sketching of step-function graph. before the exam i was quite worried about Fourier's series topic. To me it was the most difficult question but to the DCHE 2A21 ppl it is like chicken feed to them as they are CEM(cert in engrg maths) students, but at the very last min i am quite confident of this killer topic and i even attempt it for the short question although it is optional.(short question got 6 questions u need to do 4qns will do)
And finally the heat transfer paper, our very last paper(last sem, thermodynamics was the last paper and the lecturer teaching this module was also miss ST Phua). To many of us(including ashik and gerald the slackers),the paper is like a chicken feed lor,no challenge at all. instead the past yr exam paper we have been doing was very challenging...the feeling of taking this last paper before going to CPTC for our attachment training was like...SHIOK ah!!! so now i'm taking 2 weeks break before the CPTC attachment(6 weeks) begins....the feelings of having a long holiday(9 weeks) after the exam has nvr been so great, man!!! :)
